Construction begins at Mount Gambier Regional Aiport
Construction has commenced on the $9.2M Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade project with Heenan Earthworks, the lead contractor for the runway and heavy apron beginning on site.
Heenan Earthworks were successful in their tender for the civil works which includes a 120 metre asphalt extension to runway 18/36 and construction of a heavy aircraft apron; with both projects scheduled for completion October 2019.
On arrival to the airport precinct, via the entrance road, visitors will now start to see activity occurring as Heenan Earthworks begin installation of a contractor's security gate for landside and airside movements.
Airport Manager Ian Fritsch is pleased to see works commence and that a local contractor was awarded the tender. "Civil works commencing is an important milestone and it is pleasing to see a local firm being involved in a regionally important project such as this. Many years of planning and preparation for this project is finally swinging into action."
The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade is a project comprised of four main components:
- Runway extension
- Construction of a heavy aircraft apron
- Airfield ground lighting upgrade
- Terminal expansion
The Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund is funding the Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade with a grant of $3.51M, along with the South Australian Government through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure ($4.036M), the District Council of Grant ($1.154M) and the City of Mount Gambier ($500,000).
The highly anticipated terminal expansion is touted to commence late 2019 with concepts and consultation being undertaken over the next six months. Ashley Halliday Architects were contracted to lead the design of the terminal in late 2018, with the entire project due for completion December 2020.
The District Council of Grant intend to provide a seamless travelling experience for the duration of the project and careful planning is being undertaken to ensure the project does not impact on airport operations.
Many stakeholders and key partners have a vested interest in the Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade, making it a both a complex and exciting project for the region. The District Council of Grant are cognisant that information sharing is critical and regular updates through a variety of mediums will be available throughout the duration of the construction.
The Mount Gambier Regional Airport Upgrade will provide critical aviation infrastructure, support economic growth and unlock the tourism potential of the Limestone Coast.
