Air New Zealand: Tropical Cyclone Gita

Cyclone Gita is currently forecast to make landfall in New Zealand at midday today, Tuesday 20 February. We are anticipating significant disruption to our services into and out of Wellington from 2.00pm onwards.

The following regional airports are also expected to be disrupted today, Tuesday 20 February:

  • Hokitika - from midday onwards
  • Nelson - from midday onwards
  • New Plymouth - from 11.00am onwards
  • Queenstown - from midday onwards

Flights are currently operating into and out of Blenheim, Kapiti Coast and Palmerston North, however we are closely monitoring conditions.

We have organised additional services into and out of Wellington for Wednesday, 21 February. New schedule times are as follows:

· NZ6141 Auckland- Wellington 9.25am - 10.30am

· NZ6142 Wellington - Auckland 11.05am - 12.10pm

· NZ6143 Auckland - Wellington 1.15pm - 2.20pm

· NZ6144 Wellington - Auckland 2.55pm - 4.00pm

Services from Sydney and Melbourne to Wellington have been cancelled today. As a result, two services on Wednesday 21 February are also impacted. Please see below for affected flights:

If your need for travel is not immediate or you are only travelling for the day, we recommend delaying your travel. Our Contact Centre are experiencing extremely high call volumes. If your travel is not urgent, there is no need to call us immediately, please call at your own convenience.

Please note that accommodation and alternative flights are very limited for most of this week. In all cases, incidental costs and penalties such as accommodation and/or meals are the customer's responsibility.

Any customer who chooses to commence their journey as planned must be advised that they do so at their own risk. Air New Zealand will not be liable for any costs associated with disrupted travel should a customer opt to travel as planned.

You will need to refer to your travel insurance provider for any incidental costs if your travel plans are disrupted.

The following flexibility will be permitted on all fare types for customers ticketed by Air New Zealand prior to and including Sunday 18th February to travel:

· Domestically within New Zealand

· Internationally on direct services between Australia and Wellington or Christchurch

From Tuesday 20th February to Thursday 22nd February 2018.

Options for customers are as follows:

Defer Travel

Defer travel to a later Air New Zealand flight in the same class of travel up to and including Thursday 1st March 2018 without fare difference, penalty or service fees. If travel is only available in a higher cabin, the fare differential will apply.

If the proposed date of travel is unknown, then the value of the ticket may be held in credit for payment towards travel within the same 12-month validity. In this instance change penalty will be waived but fare difference and service fees will apply when re-booking.

Change Destination

Customers may change their travel to another Air New Zealand Domestic destination without penalty however any additional fare and taxes will apply.

Customers ticketed for travel on direct services between Australia and Wellington or Christchurch may change their travel to another direct service from their original departure point to another New Zealand destination without penalty however any additional fare and taxes will apply.

Refund

Normal refund rules apply and non-refundable fares remain non-refundable.

Travel As Planned

Any customer who opts to commence their journey as planned must be advised that they do so at their own risk. Due to the nature of Tropical Cyclone Gita, return travel to and from Norfolk Island could be further disrupted at any point. Air New Zealand will not be liable for any costs associated with disrupted travel should a customer opt to travel as planned.
