MTU Aero Engines is a diversified producer of commercial and military aviation engines, and manufacturer of other power and propulsion systems, as well as a global engine maintenance provider. Based in Munich, Germany, the company is involved in numerous research and production joint ventures for aviation engines. It has strong business ties to most other major engine makers, including General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation, Snecma, Avio and Turbomeca.

MTU is a JV partner in International Aero Engines, producer of the successful V2500 engine, one of two engines available for the A320 family. MTU controls 12%, along with Rolls-Royce (32.5%), Pratt & Whitney (32.5%) and Japanese Aero Engines Corporation (23%). Other JV projects include EuroJet Turbo (with Rolls-Royce, Avio & ITP), Turbo-Union (with Rolls-Royce & Avio), EuroProp International (with Rolls-Royce, Snecma and ITP) and MTU/MTRI (with Turbomeca and Rolls-Royce and Turbomeca, Rolls-Royce and ITP, respectively).

Annual revenues are excess of EUR2.7 billion p/a, with more than 7600 staff located in Munich, Berlin, Hannover, Kuala Lumpur, Zhuhai, Vancouver and Connecticut. Other affiliated companies are spread around the globe, including units in Poland, France, the Netherlands and the US.

Established as a joint venture between M.A.N. Turbo and Daimler-Benz in 1969, the company traces its lineage back through to one of aviation’s most famous engine makers, BMW Flugmotorenbau (founded in 1934). MTU Aero Engines has progressed through various owners, including Daimler, DaimlerChrysler and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. 94.1% of the company is publicly traded, after it was listed in Germany in 2005.
