Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport is a proposed new airport development project for the Chinese city of Qingdao and the nearby Blue Economic Zone. The project will provide the city with a second international airport after its Liuting International facility. It is planned that the airport will be built into a 4F standard regional gateway, with services to Japan and South Korea. Construction will commence in 2016 and is scheduled to be complete by end-2019. The code 4F airport will be located approximately 39 kilometers northwest of Qingdao and an 18.3 km2 site, and will feature a 478,000sqm terminal and two 3600m runways. In the long term, plans have also been made to construct an additional 600,000sqm terminal as traffic increases. The new airport is forecast to serve 35 million passengers in 2025 and 55 million by 2045.
Jan-2019. Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport construction headquarters estimated the airport will commence operation in 2H2019. The airport is currently at final stage of construction work.
Oct-2018. Qingdao Municipal Urban and Rural Construction Committee said construction work on the main structure and roof structure on the new Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport has been completed and has commenced renovation and equipment testing. The CNY36.0 billion (USD5.2 billion) airport project is being constructed as a category 4F airport.
Aug-2018. Shandong Airlines commenced construction of its cargo station at Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport and the facility is expected to be complete by 1Q2019. The CNY140 million (USD20.5 million) cargo station will cover 100,000sqm, of which phase one covers 40,000sqm, including a 20,000sqm building area.
Nov-2017. Qingdao Jiaodong Airport commenced an CNY950 million (USD143.1 million) ATC project on 16-Nov-2017.
Dec-2016. Qingdao Jiaodong Airport plans to complete construction and launch operation in 2019. Qingdao city stated there is no plan to remove Qingdao Liuting Airport, but the city will not operate with two airports. Qingdao Liuting Airport will continue to retain its infrastructure functions for other purposes after the launch of operation of Qingdao Jiaodong Airport.
Sep-2016. CAAC announced it would hold Qingdao Jiaodong Airport air traffic control project preliminary design review on 12-Sep-2016 to 14-Sep-2016. The air traffic control project covers an area of 23,500sqm, includes ATC service zone construction, tower construction, communication engineering, navigation project, monitoring project and meteorological project. Total investment amount to CNY956 million (USD143.24 million).
24-Aug-2016. Qingdao Jiaodong Airport commenced construction on its comprehensive transportation centre on 08-Jul-2016, with building area of 50,000sqm and car park area of 150,000sqm.
19-Aug-2016. CAAC confirmed the second Qingdao Jiaodong Airport construction project preliminary design review was held on 26-Jul-2016 to 29-Jul-2016.
15-Aug-2016. Qingdao Jiaodong Airport confirmed recently commenced construction on six underpass tunnels. The construction is scheduled to complete on 30-Nov-2017.

Apr-2016. Qingdao Airport Group signed the New Qingdao Airport project with a syndicate of 13 local Chinese banks on 08-Apr-2016. The New Qingdao Airport project is expected to involve total investment of CNY41,566 million (USD6.9 billion), including CNY33,272 million (USD5.5 billion) in airport project, of which CNY19,900 million (USD3.3 billion) will be through the syndicate.
Dec-2015. New Qingdao Airport master plan received CAAC and Qingdao City Government approval on 30-Nov-2015, according to Qingdao International Airport Group. The airport project has set target of 35 million passengers, 500,000 tonnes of cargo and 298,000 movements p/a by 2025, and 55 million passengers, 1.0 million tonnes of cargo and 452,000 movements by 2045.
