About

Qaqortoq Airport is a proposed airport to serve the city of Qaqortoq, Greenland. Kalaallit Airport A/S is overseeing the development, which is expected to feature a 1500m runway, with an option for a 299m extension.

Dec-2022. Kalaallit Airports announced Qaqortoq Airport is expected to commence operations in autumn 2025. Features of the airport will include a 2350sqm terminal and 1500m runway.

Sep-2020. Kalaallit Airports cancelled a contract notice for the construction of a new 1500m runway at Qaqortoq Airport in southern Greenland in late Aug-2020 due to higher than anticipated bids for the project. The company is expected to relaunch a revised tender in 2021 that includes a shorter 1200m runway. However, it is currently legally obliged to develop a 1500m runway according to the Greenland Country Council project approval. The Council must adopt a new law if the length of the runway is to be changed.

Feb-2020. Kalaallit Airports shortlisted five companies to bid for the construction of a new 1500m runway at Qaqortoq Airport. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2020 with commissioning in 4Q2023.

Dec-2018. Kalaallit Airports A/S initiated planning and design of Qaqortoq Airport following further study of wind measurements over a one year period. Design and planning of Qaqortoq Airport runway is scheduled in 2019 and terminal facility and other structures in 2020, with construction beginning in summer 2021. Due to shorted construction time at Qaqortoq, Kalaallit Airports aims to finalise construction of Qaqortoq, Nuuk and Ilulissat airports simultaneously in 4Q2023.

May-2018. Kalaallit Airports A/S awarded engineering and architectural supervisory contracts covering design and layout of new terminal and service buildings at airports in Ilulissat, Nuuk and Qaqortoq. COWI A/S was selected as main advisor. Zeso Architects ApS and Masanti A/S were selected as secondary advisors. Kalaallit Airports aims to have designs finalised in Apr-2019, ready for construction to begin in autumn of 2019.

May-2017. Kalaallit Airports A/S plans to construct a new airport in the city of Qaqortoq. The new Qaqortoq Airport is expected to be complete by 2021, and feature a 1500m runway. Kalaallit Airports will consider extending the runway at the new airport to 1799m.
