New Porto Alegre Airport

New Porto Alegre Airport (Portão 20 de Setembro Airport) is a proposed infrastructure development project for the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre. The total cost of the airport is expected to be USD505 million. The country's Secretary of Civil Aviation is expected to auction the private concession construction and management rights for the airport in 2015. The plan for a new airport comes as the existing Salgado Filho facility approaches its capacity of 15.3 million passengers p/a and is without the land required to expand. It is planned that the new airport will replace this facility upon completion. The airport will be located 50km north of the CBD, on a 21sq km site at Portão and will feature an international passenger terminal, cargo terminal and two 3200m x 45m runways with capacity to handle 40 million passengers p/a. The airport is expected to commence operations in 2029.

Mar-2015. Brazil’s Civil Aviation Sectariat Eliseu Padilha advised that the New Porto Alegre Airport will be "ready" in 2029. The Brazilian Government plans to construct the new airport to replace the existing Porto Alegre Salgado Filho Airport.

Jan-2015. Civil Aviation Secretariat Eliseu Padilha met with Rio Grande do Sul governor José Ivo Sartori on 09-Jan-2015 to discuss the airport. Mr Padilha said a working group had been established to assess the best action to take, including a possible expansion of Porto Alegre Salgado Filho airport in lieu of a new facility.

Jul-2014. The Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SAC) announced it received a study on demand for imports and exports from Rio Grande do Sul State from State Governor Tarso Genro which justify the construction of Portão 20 de Setembro Airport. Civil Aviation Minister Moreira Franco said the proposal would now be contracted out for further analysis. The proposed site does not suffer from the frequent and disruptive inclement weather experienced at the Porto Alegre Salgado Filho Airport, and the BRL1.2 billion (USD537 million) facility may exceed Salgado Filho in capacity. The new airport may be complete in 6-8 years.

Feb-2014. The Rio Grande do Sul Secretariat of Infrastructure and Logistics confirmed plans to construct Portão 20 de Setembro Airport, a new BRL1.2 billon (USD501 million) international airport which is intended to act as an alternative to Porto Alegre Salgado Filho Airport, being located 50km north of the state capital. The facility will have greater capacity than Salgado Filho, especially for freight operations. The Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SAC) plans to define whether the project will be completed entirely by the Government, as a public-private partnership or through a concession.
