New Makurdi/Benue Cargo Airport

Benue State Government and Aerotropolis Development Company Ltd signed an MoU for the construction of a new cargo airport in Makurdi, also known as Benue Cargo Airport. Under a public-private partnership agreement, Benue State will provide 1000 ha of land as well as an equity contribution of NGN5.2 billion (USD26 million) for the NGN37.9 billion (USD190.5 million) development. Construction commenced in 2016.

Mar-2023. Benue State's Commissioner for Information Michael Inalegwu said the Benue Government received approval from Nigeria's Government to construct a new airport serving Makurdi. Construction is expected to commence in Apr-2023 at a site near Kura village, approximately 12km from Makurdi.

Feb-2017. Cargopolis Development Consortium (CDC) COO Dr Daniel Tarka said the Benue Cargo Airport project is on schedule and will be complete in 2019. CDC recently commenced an inspection of the 5000 hectare site allocated for the airport. CDC expects to invest NGN38 billion (USD119.7 million) in the project, in which it holds an 85% equity stake. The Benue Government holds 15%.

Nov-2016. Nigeria's Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom said the State Government will not provide any funding for the NGN38 billion (USD120.6 million) New Makurdi/Benue Cargo Airport project. Mr Ortom said "a consortium" will provide the funds, which will contribute to several projects, including housing, roads and a training facility.

Nov-2016. Nigeria’s Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom stated construction on the new Benue Cargo Airport has commenced. Project facilitator Pureza Investment International said the development will see an aviation school open at the airport, with a capacity for 50 enrolled students at a time. The project is expected to amount to NGN36 billion (USD114.2 million). 

Oct-2016. Cargopolis Development Consortium (CDC) expects to complete construction of the NGN38 billion (USD120 million) cargo airport in Benue State in 18 months. 

Jan-2016. Nigeria’s Benue State Government and private investor Aerotropolis Development Company signed a MoU to establish a cargo airport in Makurdi worth NGN37.9 billion (USD190.5 million) on 21-Jan-2016. The MoU includes a concession period of 25 years according to Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Media and Information Technology Tahav Agerzua. Mr Agerzua stated the state government would provide 1000 hectares for the cargo development project as well as NGN5.2 billion (USD26.1 million) in equity contribution. Benue State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Michael Gusa and Aerotropolis Development Company Limited’s legal advisor Comfort Chigbue signed the MoU.
