New Bodø Airport is a proposed development that will replace the existing Bodø Airport. The project is under the country's National Transport plan 2018-2029. Norwegian airport operating body, Avinor, expects the new airport plans would require an investment of USD646-718 million. The existing Bodo Airport is under consideration to become a military airport. 


Dec-2023. EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) approved the construction of New Bodo Airport on 19-Dec-2023. All agreements between Avinor, the Norwegian Armed Forces and Bodø municipality regarding the acquisition and sale of land plots can be carried out and the construction contracts can be initiated. The expected investment in the project is NOK7.2 billion (EUR638.42 million), of which Avinor will contribute NOK2.4 billion (EUR212.81 million), while the rest is financed by the state and a local contribution from Bodø municipality and Nordland county municipality. New Bodo Airport is expected to become operational in 2029/30. 

Oct-2023. Norway's Ministry of Transport awarded Avinor a licence for New Bodo Airport. The preparatory work to bring water, sewage, fibre and district heating to the new airport site has been completed. The airport will feature a 25,000sqm terminal and operations building, with capacity to handle 2.3 million passengers p/a. The airport is expected to become operational in 2029. 

Jul-2023. Avinor signed a contract with Peab Anlegg for the development of the air side at New Bodø Airport. The contract includes the construction of a new runway, new taxiways and aircraft stands. Under the "interaction" contract, Avinor and Peab Anlegg are  expected to agree on the final design and cost in the contract's development phase. After the parties agree on the solutions and target price, the second phase of implementation will begin. This is the first of the two major contracts in the project. The other competition is for the construction of the new terminal building, which is expected to start on 01-Apr-2025. The terminal construction was announced in early Jun-2023 and will be decided by the end of 2023. New Bodø Airport, built by Avinor with Bodø municipality and the Norwegian Armed Forces, is scheduled to be completed in 2029. The expected cost is NOK7.2 billion (EUR614.2 million), of which Avinor will contribute NOK2.6 billion (EUR 221.8 million), while the rest is financed by the state and a local contribution from Bodø municipality and Nordland county municipality. The aeronautical part of the project has a cost frame of NOK2.2 billion (EUR187.7 million). A smaller contract for preparatory work that is underway was awarded to a contractor earlier in 2023. 

Jun-2023. Avinor launched a tender for the construction of New Bodo Airport's 22,000sqm terminal. Costs for the project are estimated at NOK7.2 billion (EUR619.5 million), with Avinor contributing NOK2.6 billion (EUR223.7 million).

Mar-2023. Avinor announced the breaking of ground on the New Bodo Airport construction project.

Feb-2023. Avinor awarded Tore Løkke AS a NOK50 million (EUR4.62 million) contract for the establishment of New Bodo Airport's technical infrastructure. The works will include electrical work for runway lighting and power supply for airport buildings.

Jan-2023. Avinor launched a NOK2.2 billion (EUR205.23 million) tender for construction works for the New Bodo Airport project. Works will include construction of runways, taxiways, aircraft stands and other external infrastructure. The deadline for bid submission is 06-Feb-2023, with a winner expected to be announce on 23-Jun-2023.

Jan-2022. Avinor postponed the decision on the implementation of the New Bodo Airport construction project until 2023. The company's contribution towards the NOK6.6 billion (EUR650 million) project was originally estimated at NOK1.8 billion (EUR180 million), but the 2022 national budget increased Avinor's contribution to NOK2.2 billion (EUR220 million).

Dec-2021. Avinor awarded Team Marstrand/Advansia a contract for New Bodo Airport's construction. The first phase of the project will encompass design and financing agreements.

May-2021. Avinor submitted pre project plans for New Bodo Airport to Norway's Government for quality assurance and decision making. The airport is expected to be financed by the government, Bodo municipality and Avinor.

Jun-2020. Avinor selected the recommended conceptual design for New Bodo Airport. The location of the facility will allow for the expansion of Bodo's urban areas away from the city centre and also brings significant noise relief for residents. The preliminary project is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, with the opening scheduled between 2024 and 2026. New Bodo Airport is expected to have a total capacity of 2.3 million passengers p/a.

Oct-2019. Avinor issued a tender to carry out a two month feasibility study for development of New Bodo Airport. As part of planning of the airport, Avinor aims to carry out a feasibility study to evaluate and verify area and volumes needed for the construction of a new automated baggage handling system as well as other developments. The new airport in Bodø will replace the existing airport in Bodo by 2025-2027. Offers are invited until 02-Dec-2019.

Aug-2019. Avinor board of directors presented a draft concept for the construction of the New Bodo Airport. The concept envisages construction of the new single-runway airport 1km to the south-west of the existing Bodo Airport. The project represents investment of NOK5.8 billion (EUR577.8 million). The draft is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021 at the latest.

Aug-2018. Avinor reported Norway's Government will contribute NOK2.2 billion (USD262.3 million) towards the New Bodo Airport project under the National Transport Plan for 2018-2029, with Avinor to make up the remaining NOK1.4 billion (USD167 million) to ensure investment required for the current Bodo Airport in the coming years. 

Oct-2017. Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen stated the airport operator pursued an aggressive airport infrastructure and capacity expansion strategy in north west Norway, in order to support to dynamically increasing tourist traffic in the region, relative to the rest of the country. The strategy has included Avinor's New Bodo Airport development project, as well as assessment of new airport structures in Lofoten, Ofoten, Vesterålen and Helgeland. Mr Falk-Petersen said Avinor is now revising its north west strategy and will publish the details in 2018.

Jun-2017. Norway's Bodø Kommune announced Norway's Government has approved construction of New Bodo Airport. 

Mar-2017. 

31-Mar-2017. Avinor confirmed it will present plans for New Bodo Airport in connection with Norway's National Transport Plan 2018-2029 in 1H2017. Avinor expects the cost of the new facility to range from NOK4.5 billion to NOK5 billion (EUR492 million/USD525 million to EUR546 million/USD583 million). Avinor's contribution to the financing is estimated at NOK1.5 billion (EUR164 million/USD175 million). The Government previously declared its intention to provide NOK2.2 billion (EUR240.3 million/USD257 million) in public funding for the airport. 

01-Mar-2017. Avinor announced Norway's Government has endorsed construction of New Bodo Airport. Avinor is now awaiting formal documentation for the project from the Norwegian Ministry of Transport.

27-Jan-2017. Avinor EVP strategy Jon Sjolander stated the proposed new airport in Bodo would be able to handle Boeing 787 size equipment, and for the new facility to comfortably operate services to the US west coast. 

27-Jan-2017. Avinor stated proposed plans for a new airport in Bodo would require investment from DKK4.5 billion (EUR507 million/USD535 million) to NOK5 billion (EUR563 million/USD595 million). Avinor EVP strategy Jon Sjolander said the project involves relocating the existing Bodo Airport 900m south, while the airport would operate with a 2600m runway. The airport will also operate all ATC services via a remote tower. The existing Bodo Airport is under consideration to become a military airport. 

25-Jan-2017. Avinor proposed construction of a new airport in Bodo under Norway's National Transport plan 2018-2029. Avinor stated it will commission Norway's Ministry of Transport to, "Examine the concept further", in order to estimate investment costs and develop an implementation plan. Bodo Airport operates in the region, however Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg expressed interest in relocating the current facility to the town of Mo i Rana.
