Mzuzu Orton Chirwa International Airport is a proposed airport to serve the northern capital of Malawi, Mzuzu. The airport will be developed on a 90 acre site with two 2000m runways.


Mar-2022. Malawi's Ministry of Lands, via its official Facebook account, stated a site at Lusangadzi near Mzuzu was selected for the Orton Chirwa International Airport. The next phase of the project will involve land valuations and the relocation of residents.

Sep-2019. Malawi's Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Joseph Mwanamvekha presented the Malawi budget 2019/20, which allocates an initial MWK500 million (USD689,548) in funding for the construction of the New Mzuzu International Airport.

May-2018. Malawi's Ministry of Transport stated the delay in constructing New Mzuzu International Airport is due to issues concerning compensation for the residents, whose land was acquired for the airport's site.

Nov-2017. Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika stressed the government aims to open the northern regions of Malawi with a new airport, pointing out the Mzuzu International Airport project is scheduled to begin in Jan-2018.

Jul-2017. Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika inspected the site selected for the construction of Mzuzu International Airport, with work slated to begin in Nov-2017. The project is expected to take up to 18 months to complete, funded with MWK14.6 billion (USD20 million) from the Exim Bank of China. Ministry of Transport and Public Works principal secretary Francis Chinsinga said the airport's 90 acre site will be large enough to accommodate two 2km runways as well as other associated infrastructure.

Jun-2015. Malawi Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced plans to develop a new airport at Mzuzu. A site for the Mzuzu Airport has been selected.
