Vijayapura Airport, also known as Bijapur Airport, is a proposed new airport construction project to be located in the town of Vijayapura, approximately 50 kilometres north of capital of Karnataka State; Bangalore. The airport will be used to alleviate congestion at the city's Kempegowda International Airport.


Jul-2023. India's Karnataka State Government Minister for Commerce, Industries and Infrastructure M B Patil announced construction of Bangalore Vijayapura Airport is scheduled for completion in Feb-2024. The Government has released an additional INR500 million (USD6.08 million) in funding to bring the completion date forward from Apr-2024. The funding will facilitate the installation of equipment to enable night operations.

Jan-2023. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is tentatively expected to inaugurate Bangalore Vijayapura Airport in Feb-2023. The airport required an estimated investment of INR3.5 billion (USD42.9 million) to develop and is equipped with a 1900m runway.

Feb-2020. India's Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri informed the Lok Sabha that the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) granted in principle approval for the development of Bangalore Vijayapura Airport.

Jan-2020. India's Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola reported five airports in Karnataka are expected to commence operations within the next two years, including Bangalore Vijayapura Airport.

May-2019. Karnataka's Cabinet approved a proposal to proceed with the development of Bijapur Airport on a 51:49 cost sharing basis with India's Government.

Nov-2016. India's Ministry of Civil Aviation accorded (22-Nov-2016) 'site clearance' and 'in principle' approvals to set up 18 new greenfield airports. Airports are proposed under Airports Authority of India (AAI), State Governments and promoted by private developers, include Bijapur Airport, at an estimated cost of INR1.5 billion (USD22 million).

Jul-2015. India's Minister of State for Civil Aviation Dr Mahesh Sharma confirmed the government granted in principle approval for the development of 13 new airports at cities including Bijapur. The estimated project cost is INR1.5 billion (USD23.2 million)

Jan-2015. Karnataka Government Special Representative in New Delhi C S Nadagouda said he intends to meet with representatives from Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 19-Jan-2015 with the aim of expediting the plans to construct a new airport at Vijayapura. Mr Nadagouda also intends to lobby Minister of Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapati Raju to commence the project as soon as possible. Mr Nadagouda said the Karnataka Government is willing to provide INR500 million (USD7.9 million) to AAI for terrain levelling works related to the project.
