Al Qunfotha Airport

Al Qunfotha Airport is a proposed new airport development project for the port of Al Qunfotha, located approximately 400km south of Mecca.
Nov-2018. Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) commenced preparations ahead of tender release for the construction of the new Al Qunfotha Airport project. The new airport is expected to accommodate up to 500,000 passengers p/a, and will feature a lounge, an ATC tower, and parking for five aircraft at a time.
Feb-2018. Saudi Arabia General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) plans to issue tenders for the construction of the new Al Qunfotha Airport within the next 60 days, according to Emir of Makkah and Adviser to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Prince Khaled Al-Faisal.
Dec-2016. Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) received land for new Qunfudah Airport. GACA assistant to the president Tareq Alabduljabar said work will soon commence on planning and design for the airport. Once complete, Qunfudah Airport is expected to handle 500,000 passengers p/a.
Dec-2015. Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is prepared to begin construction of the new Qunfudah Airport according to the Emir of Makkah and Adviser to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Prince Khaled Al-Faisal. Prince Prince Khaled Al-Faisal reported that the airport is in its “final stages of planning. GACA and the municipality have agreed on the project site and referred it to the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs for final approval. GACA is preparing to present the project to the private sector to begin construction”. The proposed site for Qunfudah Airport will be within the Jabal Murshid region, and the project is part of Saudi Arabia's plan to expand the aviation network and develop new airports.
Dec-2014. Saudi Arabian General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) reported the budget for the proposed Al-Qunfotha Airport has been approved, but the initial location selected for the project has found to be unsuitable. Two alternative locations have been identified, one in Al-Nakhla and one in Al-Dansah, but the authority will need to negotiate with Al-Qunfotha and Jeddah municipal authorities to secure one of the sites.
