Abancay Airport is expected to be constructed in the near future following an announcement by the Peruvian Government in Aug-2012. Peru's Apurimac Regional Government plans to to invest PEN60 million (USD22.5 million) to construct Abancay Airport, with works to begin in Jun-2013. Works were initially scheduled for completion in 1H2014. A revised completion date has not been specified. The funding would come from the Ministry of Economy and Finance as well as private sources.
Feb-2014. Abancay Airport plans to commence test flights in May-2014, following which the new facility's operating concession is expected to be awarded, according to Apurimac Regional President Elias Segovia. No date for the concession process or the inauguration of the facility was reported. Construction is estimated to have cost PEN70 million (USD24.8 million) and the airport is equipped with a 2500m runway and is expected to attract tourist traffic to nearby Inca sites.
Jul-2013. Regional Apurímac President Elías Segovia Ruiz announced the beginning of earthmoving works for the construction of Abancay Airport, located in the capital and largest city of the region. Mr Segovia Ruiz said construction of the facility will be tendered to a private-sector concessionaire, without mentioning further details. No timeframe was announced. Construction of the PEN60 million (USD22.5 million) facility is expected to be complete by 1H2014.
