About

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent federal agency responsible for determining the cause of transportation accidents, the promotion of transportation safety and the assisting of victims of accidents. The NTSB develops safety recommendations based on finding from investigations and analysis, which are issued to government agencies at the federal, state and local government levels. Responsibilities include:

  • Safety studies;
  • Evaluations of the effectiveness of other government agencies' accident-prevention programmes;
  • Review of appeals of enforcement regarding aviation and marine certificates;
  • Review of appeals of civil penalty action taken by the FAA.

The NTSB is responsible for transport matters relating to aviation, highway, marine, pipeline and hazardous materials, railroad and transportation disaster assistance.
