About
João Paulo II Airport serves the administrative capital and largest city of the Portuguese Autonomous Region of the Azores, Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. The airport is the fourth busiest in Portugal by passenger traffic and the busiest in the Azores. Located nearly halfway between Europe and North America, the airport serves not only as a hub for inter-island traffic in the archipelago, but also between the Portuguese mainland, Canada and the US. SATA maintains its hub at Ponta Delgada, with SATA Air Açores handling domestic inter-island traffic and its international subsidiary SATA International handling domestic and international long-haul traffic. The airport is also served by Portuguese flag carrier TAP Portugal, and a handful of European seasonal services. ANA Aeroportos de Portugal operates the facility.
