Istanbul Airport is located 35 kilometres away from the city centre. The first phase of Istanbul Airport, which is the largest infrastructure project in the history of the Turkish Republic history, opened for service on 29-Oct-2018. The airport has been operational with all units and at full capacity since 06-Apr-2018. Covering an area of 76.5 million square meters, the airport serves as a global hub between Asia, Africa and Europe. In Jun-2020, Istanbul Airport inaugurated its third independent runway, which makes it the airport’s fifth fully operational runway and increasing airside capacity by 50%. It also makes Istanbul Airport the first in Türkiye, and the second in Europe, to operate three independent parallel runways.
