The airport ranked among the busiest in Pakistan and is a major base for Pakistan International Airlines and Shaheen Air International. Islamabad International Airport replaced Benazir Bhutto International Airport as the primary gateway to the capital city. The airport continues to handle aeronautical operations for VIPs and VVIPs, including elected officials, following the inauguration of New Islamabad International Airport on 03-May-2018.
