Gothenburg City Airport serves the city of Gothenburg in southern Sweden. The airport is the smaller of the two airports serving Gothenburg, with Gothenburg-Landvetter the larger. The airport is popular among LCCs and is an alternative to Gothenburg-Landvetter. Ryanair and Wizz Air are major operators at Gothenburg City.
Operations at Göteborg City (Saeve) Airport are to be wound down after analysis of the runway system indicated extensive measures are needed for its long-term development.
Swedavia will acquire the remaining shares in the company that operates it and has adopted an approach to the gradual winding down of commercial flights.
On 24-Aug-2015 Swedavia AB and Serneke Group AB signed a LoI regarding Säve Airport. The letter of intent specifies that the two parties will be involved in a joint process aimed at reaching a transfer agreement. Previous announcements that helicopter operations and private aviation will continue until further notice and that business aviation will remain in operation there until at least 30-Jun-2016, are not affected. Swedavia noted it had conducted dialogues "for a while with a number of parties concerning the transfer of Säve Airport" with the LoI indicating that "these dialogues have ended in favour of an exclusive process aimed at reaching a transfer agreement between the two parties".
Since late Nov-2014, heavy passenger traffic at Göteborg City has been redirected to Göteborg Landvetter Airport, which is the result of potential deficiencies identified in the runway system.
In-depth analyses of the runway system have determined extensive measures are needed in order for heavier passenger traffic to return to airport, and investment requirements for the runway system are estimated to be around €26.3 million. This does not appear to be considered cost effective at this time.
