Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is considered to be Peru's second airport and the primary gateway to the country's second city of Cusco, as well as the surrounding tourism-rich Cusco Region. Located in the middle of the city, the airport faces capacity restrictions and currently lacks safety infrastructure to allow for night flights, thereby restricting the airport to short-haul services. The airport is served primarily by domestic carriers, linking Cusco with Peru's major cities, while Amaszonas provides the sole international connection with Bolivia.
Plans for a new international airport for Cusco are underway, to be located northwest of the city in the town of Chinchero. The airport is expected to open in 2020 and will replace Cusco Velasco Airport upon its completion.
