About
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (formerly known as Toronto Island Airport and Toronto City Center Airport) is an airport located eight minutes from downtown Toronto, on the Toronto Islands in Lake Ontario. Billy Bishop is the smaller airport serving the Toronto metropolitan area, behind Toronto Pearson International. Regional, training and medical air services frequently use the airport and due to runway restrictions, operations are limited to turboprop aircraft. The airport's downtown location and runway restrictions have also made it possible for Porter Airlines to carve out a niche in the short-haul/business segment.
Owned and operated by PortsToronto (formerly the Toronto Port Authority), the airport has been a source of controversy between local residents, who have often called for its closure, and the airport's owners and Porter Airlines, which are seeking the increased use of the facility.
