VLM Airlines

Ceased Operations on 22-Jun-2016

VLM Airlines was a Dutch regional carrier based in Antwerp. Formerly a scheduled airline in its own right, VLM was acquired by Air France-KLM S.A. in Dec-2007. VLM began operating under the group's Irish CityJet regional airline brand from May-2009 onwards, with the VLM brand disappearing entirely in 2010. In Apr-2014, CityJet and VLM were acquired from Air France-KLM S.A. by the German company, INTRO Aviation. INTRO divested its stake to the carrier's management in Nov-2014. VLM operated as a wholly independently owned and operated airline from Jan-2015. VLM Airlines shut down it's subsidiary VLM Airlines BV in 2015, as part of a cost-reduction plan for Belgium. The carrier filed for bankruptcy protection in May-2016, and was granted special status by the Antwerp commercial court for a period of six months. However, VLM Airlines stated the temporary protection period would be insufficient to undertake a "sustainable" restructure programme. The carrier filed for bankruptcy on 22-Jun-2016 and suspended all service operations with immediate effect.

On 31-May-2017, SHS Antwerp Aviation acquired a controlling stake in Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium, subsequent to a partnership agreement between Thomas Cook Group and Brussels Airlines in Mar-2017. SHS Aviation is expected to be using Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium's air operator certificate and operating licence as part of plans to relaunch VLM Airlines. Services are expected to commence in late-2017, following the conclusion of an integration of Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium assets into Brussels. The services will be operated under a joint service schedule with VLM Airlines Slovenia (wholly owned by SHS Antwerp Aviation).
