Meridiana (formerly Meridiana Fly) is an Italian airline headquartered at Olbia-Costa Smeralda Airport, with its operations largely based at Milan Malpensa Airport and Rome Fiumicino airports. In Jul-2011, the airline announced its would merge with scheduled and charter carrier, Air Italy. The merger was completed in Apr-2013. Air Italy remains under its own Air Operator's Certificate and operates services on behalf of Meridiana. The airline group primarily focusses on serving worldwide leisure markets.
In Jul-2016, Qatar Airways signed a contribution and shareholders agreement with Alisarda for the purchase of 49% of Merdiana's shares, subject to certain conditions which must be fulfilled by the closing of the agreement. The European Commission approved the acquisition and joint control of Meridiana S.p.A on 23-Mar-2017, paving the way for Qatar Airways and Alisarda to establish 'HoldCo', a new holding company for Meridiana. Qatar formalised the acquisition of the 49% stake of AQA Holding, the holding company of Meridiana, on 28-Sep-2017. In Nov-2017 Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker announced intentions to rename the airline 'Air Italy' with the aim to become "the flag carrier of Italy".
