US Airways leads stronger day for US airline shares

Analysis

US airline stocks finished higher on Thursday, led by US Airways which gained 6.7% on heavy trading. Sliding oil prices have helped stocks for US carriers, with only Hawaiian Airlines shares slipping back (-0.2%) in trading yesterday.

Canadian airline shares were notably weaker, with Westjet down 2.4% and Air Canada B shares giving up 2.1%. Latin American airline stocks also fell, with GOL down 2.4%.

LAN announced it has ordered five B767-300ER aircraft, in addition to the three orders for the aircraft announced in Feb-2011. LAN already owns 28 B767-300ERs and 11 B767-300 freighters. The five B767s ordered are worth USD822 million each, according to the list price.
