Tiger Airways flies into Darwin
SYDNEY (Tourism Australia) - Tourism Australia has welcomed Tiger Airways' announcement that it will begin flying between Singapore and Darwin from 19 December 2005.
"This is fantastic news for Australia and will encourage overseas travellers to visit Darwin and disperse throughout Australia," said Scott Morrison, Managing Director, Tourism Australia.
Tiger Airways, based in Singapore and a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines will fly its 180-seat Airbus 320 on the route and arrive in Darwin four times a week.
"With only four hours flying time between Singapore and Darwin, these new services will make it even easier for international travellers to visit Australia.
"As Singapore is a major hub, travellers from throughout Asia and Europe will be able to take advantage of the new services offered by Tiger Airways.
"The UK is Australia's largest market for international visitors and arrivals from Singapore, a high repeat market, are up by 14 per cent this year.
"Tiger Airways will be promoting visits to Darwin throughout its Asian network allowing the Northern Territory to directly target potential visitors from Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines, Singapore and emerging markets of India and China.
"Travellers are looking for new experiences in Australia. Better access to Darwin, Kakadu the Northern Territory provides travellers with refreshingly new reasons to visit Australia.
"These new services will broaden travel options for potential visitors to Australia.
"At Tourism Australia, we are focused on encouraging visitors to travel beyond our major gateway cities. These new flights will not only draw international visitors to the Territory for short-breaks but also encourage them to stop over in Darwin on their way to other Australian destinations.
"These flights represent a significant increase in capacity for Darwin airport, stimulating the Territory economy and creating jobs for locals," Mr Morrison concluded.
