Thai Airways names ops head Apinan Sumanaseni as new president

Analysis

BANGKOK (XFNews ASIA) - Thai Airways International said its head of operations, Apinan Sumanaseni, will become the company's new president.

Apinan, who has spent 30 years at the company, was selected from four internal candidates at a board meeting today, Thai Airways official Wanchai Sarathulthat told reporters.

The airline has been hunting for the new chief since August last year when it suspended Kanok Abhiradee after the carrier incurred its worst-ever quarterly loss totalling 4.78 bln baht in the three months to June in 2005.

Analysts have said the new boss must quickly tackle pressing problems of high oil prices and intense competition from low-cost rivals in the regional market.
