Republic gains on improved traffic; Alaska Air up marginally, American Airlines falls

Republic Airways (+2.6%) was the biggest gainer in a day of mixed trading for North and South American airline stocks on Thursday (02-Dec-2010). The carrier reported a 3.0 ppt year-on-year rise in load factor for Nov-2010 during trading, to 78%. The improvement was the result of a 4.0% improvement in traffic (RPMs), on a 1.0% increase in capacity.

Passenger numbers for the month also rose, gaining 2%, to 2.5 million.

Subsidiary, Frontier Airlines reported a 4.0 ppt rise in load factor for Nov-2010, to 81%. Passenger numbers for the month were up 1% to 1.1 million.

Alaska Airlines passenger numbers up 10.3%

Alaska Air (+0.1%) made a very marginal gain for the session after Alaska Airlines reported a 4.1 ppt improvement in load factor for Nov-2010, to 83.9%. Horizon Air also reported an increase in load factor for the period, up 3.7 ppts to 76.3%.

Both carriers passenger numbers also rose for Nov-2010, particularly Alaska Airlines, which reported a 10.9% rise in passengers to 1.4 million. Horizon Air passenger numbers gained 1.3% to 547,000.

Air Canada (+1.6%) and FedEx (+1.3%) also ended the session higher.

American Airlines goes head-to-head with Virgin America

American Airlines (-2.1%) declined after Virgin America stated it plans to increase its services from Dallas/Fort Worth. The carrier aims to command 8% of the US travel market within four or five years, according to Virgin Atlantic President Richard Branson. AMR Corp's American Airlines currently controls more than 80% of the services at Dallas/Fort Worth.

Delta Air Lines (-2.7%) and JetBlue (-1.4%) were also down for the day.
