Tampa International Airport: a solid foundation for network ambitions

Premium Analysis

Tampa International airport charted solid passenger growth in 2017, and continues to celebrate service expansion in 2018, with coveted new service to San Diego, an additional airline offering flights to London Gatwick, and a service expansion by Icelandair to Reykjavik in Sep-2018.

The Tampa market has historically leaned more toward leisure passengers, but the airport is doing work to change that mix, and the new service to San Diego fits into that strategy. Additionally, the airport is working to add more international destinations from its wish list, which includes additional services to Europe and Latin America.

Tampa is a unique airport in that it never had a hub status to lose as the US airline industry consolidated into four large airlines, two low cost airlines and two ultra low cost carriers. Although the airport has encountered challenges during economic downturns, Tampa has rebounded nicely, and is focusing on continued growth.
