South Africa prepares to restart international flights in Oct-2020

Premium Analysis

Of all the countries in the world, South Africa was one of those likely to be the hardest hit by the pandemic owing to its economic-social demographics.

And it was, but latterly its virus infection rate has dropped almost to zero. It may be one of the first examples of herd immunity in this outbreak. The government is confident enough to allow international air services to resume in Oct-2020, those flights having been suspended for several months.

But the government is equally keen to stop the virus returning via international channels, and the way it handles health-related immigration issues will be closely watched - not only by those in Africa, but by observers throughout the world.
