New airport to be built in Belgrade, the reasons mired in mystery
While any news of a new airport development, however far in the future, is good news right now, the proposal from the Serbian government for a new Belgrade airport poses more questions than it supplies answers.
With six million passengers a year before the pandemic, Belgrade is not in the top league of European airports. It serves its purpose well, and the country, already well regarded by China, has been investigated for long haul routes and airport development previously by that country.
But the existing Nikola Tesla airport was only put under concession three years ago, with a big demand on concessions fees and for investment placed on the concessionaire, and there is still 22 years to run on it.
What can have changed in that time to make the government decide it is time for a change, and what prospects are there for the concessionaire where the new airport is concerned?
