Kingfisher sees steep market share decline – and led loss-making list of private carriers in 2008/09

Premium Analysis

The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) report on Indian domestic traffic in Oct-2009, showed total passenger numbers of 4.0 million, a 26.7% year-on-year increase. Kingfisher reported carriage of 823,000 passengers, up 84.9% compared with Oct-2008 (Air Deccan’s passenger numbers were not consolidated with Kingfisher’s passenger statistics until Dec-2008). The underlying result is a drop in Kingfisher/Air Deccan passenger numbers, which, having peaked in May-2009, have since steadily declined, resulting in a steep market share loss.
