UPDATE: JAL to decide "next month" on alliances – Nikkei

Analysis

In an update to a previous report published in today's Mainichi newspaper, Japan Airlines has confirmed it would decide next month which US carrier to tie up with, according to reports in today's Nikkei. JAL's incoming Chairman, Kazuo Inamori, has met with top executives from Delta and American.

According to the Nikkei report, an official at the Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation of Japan (ETIC), which is overseeing JAL's restructuring plan, stated, "joining hands with a US airline is a significant decision for JAL, and the choice [of tie-up partner] will be made in February after careful consideration", noting that the ETIC would make a final decision based on Inamori's input.

Earlier, the Mainichi Newspaper reported that JAL had decided to drop its alliance with American Airlines and oneworld in favour of Delta and SkyTeam, without citing sources.
