The US has failed to reach a highly sought-after “open

skies” aviation agreement with China and both sides are unlikely to discuss

the matter for at least another three years. It is a set-back for the US major

carriers, all of which are increasingly focused on expansion into international

markets (of which China is one of the brightest opportunities), to bolster their

earnings amid a weak domestic US environment.
