Only two of Top 50 airlines on Twitter using the medium effectively - report
Social Media Agency, SHIFT Interactive, reports that, of the Top 50 airlines on Twitter, only two carriers have generated reasonable scale, and are quickly pulling away from their rivals. JetBlue, a low cost carrier from the US has over 1.2 million followers, followed by Southwest with over 650,000 followers.
Only nine airlines currently have more than 10,000 followers.
AirlinesOnTwitter.Com was launched today, dedicated to tracking the use and adoption of Twitter and Social Media tools by airlines.
"Twitter is a truly unique marketing opportunity for the airline industry. There has never been a platform that costs so little to manage for a business, yet has such potentially significant business implications", said SHIFT Interactive.
The latest research has revealed that the airline industry is slow on the uptake of Social Media tools like Twitter. Currently 45 million users are signed up to a twitter account, yet only a fraction of airlines use this tool to effectively communicate with the costumers.
According to SHIFT Interactive, "Twitter is very misunderstood. As a marketing tool for pushing information seamlessly and instantly to thousands, or even millions of people worldwide, there really is no equal for business. If Social Media tools like Twitter and Facebook were implemented more strategically by airlines, they could be seeing very real, positive results to their bottom line".
