GOL leads strong day for North and South American airline shares

Analysis

GOL reported a 5.9% increase in demand across its route network for Jan-2011. The carrier has a consolidated load factor of 75.6%, while domestic load factors were 77.7%.

Shares in the carrier rose 4.4%. Elsewhere in Latin America, airline shares were up strongly, with shares in LAM Airlines up 4% and shares in TAM up 3.7%. Colombian carrier Copa was up 1.4%. The company announced it is now selling tickets and distributing information about promotions and offers via Facebook.

In the US, shares in LCC JetBlue rose 3.5%. The carrier reported traffic rose 5.1% in Jan-2011, while yield (revenue per available seat mile) shot up 13%. The carrier cut capacity by 2.6% over the month. As a result, load factor rose 5.9 percentage points to 80%.
