GAO red flags FAA’s slot auction plan
The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) may have put the final nail into the plan by the US Department of Transportation (DoT) and US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to auction takeoff and landing slots at New York regional airports. At the end of Sep-08, the Congressional research body formed the legal opinion that that FAA currently lacks the necessary authority to auction arrival and departure slots, and thus also lacks authority to retain and use proceeds from these auctions.
