American share prices go with the tide - and oil price expectations

Predicting the reaction of the gamblers in the US market to news of any kind is near-impossible these days. On the day the Dow Jones Industrial average rose 1.83% and most American airline stocks rose with the tide.

However Southwest continued its gentle decline, as its sheen evaporates.

Meanwhile, AirTran's CFO, Arne G. Haak, publicly anticipated the airline's first loss since its inception in 1999. Consequently, the airline's shares rose 8.0%. The apparent reason for a rise? - talk of capacity moderation ahead.
