New Jakarta Airport: Growth returns, but the site is still undecided

JAKARTA IS ONE of many major cities and regions, including Manila, Sydney, Istanbul, Mexico City, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai, Bogotá, Phnom Penh, Jeju and central Bangladesh, where a second or replacement airport is either under construction or being planned.

Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) was the world's 17th busiest airport in 2017, handling 60.25 million passengers (+8.1%) according to the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation. The airport rose five places in ranking, which was the joint largest rise among the top 30 airports.

The recent surge in passenger traffic has added to the urgency of identifying the best site for a new Jakarta airport, but a variety of factors have to be taken into account; a previously selected - then discarded - site may again find favour.
