The Department of Transportation issued a USD50 million penalty to American Airlines for violations between 2019 and 2023 related to mishandling wheelchairs and failing to provide adequate assistance to passengers with disabilities, requiring the carrier to invest in equipment and a wheelchair tagging system as part of the settlement1.
