Travellers welcome GACA's new compensation rules
Saudi Arabian airline passengers are reportedly pleased with new rules issued by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), designed to ensure airport across the country operate efficiently (Arab News, 11-Jan-2011). Passengers will be receive SAR300 (USD80) in compensation per hour from airline companies in the event of delays. Airlines must also provide hotel accommodation to passengers at a cost of up to SAR3000 a day if they cancel flights and fail to provide alternative arrangements. GACA will issue fines of up to SAR50,000 per violation and the authority has the right to revoke the licences of airlines if they fail to abide by the rules. The laws come into force in 10 days.
