Southwest Airlines to postpone delivery of 67 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft

Southwest Airlines announced (23-Jun-2016) plans to postpone the delivery of 67 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft by up to six years, from delivery dates of 2019-2022 to 2023-2025. The decision to delay the delivery will defer some USD1.9 billion in spending. The carrier has restructured the future fleet deliveries to provide "significant flexibility":

  • Added two pre-owned 737-700 aircraft to 2016;
  • Move delivery of six 737-800 aircraft from 2018 to 2017;
  • Defer delivery of 10 MAX-8 aircraft from 2019 to 2023;
  • Defer delivery of 22 MAX-8 aircraft from 2020 to 2024 and 2025;
  • Defer delivery of 20 MAX-8 aircraft from 2021 to 2024 and 2025;
  • Defer delivery of 15 MAX-8 aircraft from 2022 to 2025;
  • Add five MAX options to 2019, accelerated from 2027 options;
