Rio de Janeiro Galeao Airport announces strategy for handling record passenger numbers
Rio de Janeiro Galeao International Airport announced (18-Aug-2016) it expects to handle the largest movement in the airport's history, on 22-Aug-2016, the day following the closure of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The airport expects to handle 85,000 passengers on the day, more than twice the normal daily operations which average 40,000. Take-off and landing operations are expected to reach 430 throughout the day. Charter operations at the airport will also reach a new record, as 46 aircraft will operate during the day. The airport hired 135 additional personnel for the occasion. In addition, the airport is also implementing remote check-ins at the Athletes' Village between 21/23-Aug-2016, where the approximately 7500 athletes and delegations will be able to check-in and dispatch their up to 28,000 luggage and equipment. A total of 65 check-in counters will be deployed to the Olympic Village. The airport hired an additional three X-ray equipment to handle the increase in demand, totalling eight X-rays.
