Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta Airport commences greenfield terminal project

Kenya's Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport commenced (03-Dec-2013) construction of its KES55.5 billion (USD640 million) new passenger terminal on 03-Dec-2013. Construction will be undertaken in two phases by a JV between Anhui Civil Engineering Group and China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation. The project is expected to be complete by 2017. When complete, the 178,000sqm terminal will have capacity for 20 million passengers p/a, 50 international and 10 domestic check-in points, 32 contact and eight remote gates, 45 aircraft stands and railway and bus terminals. The airport currently has capacity for 2.5 million passengers p/a, handles 6.5 million p/a and is expected to handle 25 million p/a by 2025, assuming a growth rate of 12% p/a. The airport also plans to construct a fourth terminal, interim terminal and second runway; redesign the three existing terminals; and establish additional remote aircraft stands and bus gates.
