Sarawak's Government acquired MASwings from Malaysia Airlines Group in Feb-2025, with plans to transform it into a full-service airline named AirBorneo1. The Government intended to maintain rural air services in Sarawak and Sabah and pursue domestic and international expansion2. More than 300 MASwings staff were absorbed into AirBorneo as part of the transition, and the government continued subsidising rural air services3 2.
