Lufthansa announces further strike action on 04-Sep-2012, significant delays on 31-Aug-2012

Lufthansa stated (02-Sep-2012) strike action by the Unabhaengige Flugbegleiter Organisation/Independent Flight Attendants Organization (UFO) has been announced for 04-Sep-2012. Further details will be provided at least six hours in advance of the action. No strike action is planned for 03-Sep-2012 (although 19 services were cancelled following significant delays the preceding day), although strike action did occur at Frankfurt International Airport on 31-Aug-2012. The union reportedly plans to strike for longer than the eight hours it did on 31-Aug-2012 at more airports, but it still considering the exact details. The carrier, as reported by local media sources including Spiegel Online, dpa and The Local, said the first day of labour action cost the carrier millions of Euros and resulted in the cancellation of at least 206 services, primarily within Europe, equating to around a quarter of its services at its Frankfurt hub. Around 1000 flight attendants were involved in the strike action, more than expected, UFO said, with the mass cancellations resulting in the partial closure of the airport amid a lack of gate space. Lufthansa Cargo has also warned its operations will be affected due to delays in freight shipment on the bellyhold of Lufthansa passenger aircraft. The carrier's freighter services are continuing to operate as scheduled. Meanwhile, reports in Der Spiegel indicate the carrier could enter new negotiations with the unions on 10-Sep-2012. The UFO has declined requests by Lufthansa to return to the negotiating table. [more - original PR - Lufthansa] [more - original PR - UFO - German]
