Kenya to scale up airport expansion and modernisation under FY2017 budget
Kenya's National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, in the Government's FY2016/17 Budget Statement, said (08-Jun-2016) the Government will scale up ongoing airport expansion and modernisation projects, commission terminal 1E and commence construction of a second runway at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2018. The Government also intends to commence expansion of Eldoret Airport to enable operations by large cargo aircraft and position the airport as a transport hub. In the FY2017 budget, the Government allocated KES800 million (USD7.9 million) for upgrades at Isiolo Airport, Lokichoggio Airport, Malindi Airport and Suneka Airport. Mr Rotich noted the completion of the screening yard and security toll gate at Nairobi Airport and said rehabilitation work at Embu Airport, Lodwar Airport, Nanyuki Airport and Voi Ikanga Airstrip is ongoing.
