Japan Airlines has no 'miracle revival measure'; key challenge to 'nuture good management'

Japan Airlines Chairman Kazuo Inamori commented that there is "no miracle revival measure" for the carrier, but added that "each division manager has thoroughly pursued cost reductions in the past year. JAL cannot be rehabilitated unless its senior officials are imbued with a strong will" (Asahi Shimbun, 20-Jan-2011). Mr Inamori stated his most important challenge us is to "nurture good management people". Mr Inamori has selected an "amoeba" style of management to eliminate red tape and spur competition among the carrier's divisions.
