Background ✨

IATA urged governments to strengthen ICAO’s CORSIA, warning an EU ETS scope expansion would lift compliance costs by 40% to EUR280 billion in 2027-2040, and opposed extra-territorial measures such as “EU ETS as a Service”1. Airlines for Europe argued EU ETS prices were volatile, citing EUR92/tonne CO2 in Jan-2026, and warned wider scope could shift traffic to non-EU hubs while calling for ETS costs to align with CORSIA and revenues to be recycled into SAF2 3.
