Australia Pacific aviation: resilient demand meets a tightening cost base

Premium Insight

Australia's domestic aviation market is proving more resilient than the increasingly challenging operating environment might suggest, but the recovery is becoming increasingly uneven.

Discussions at the CAPA Airline Leader Summit - Australia Pacific 2026 highlighted a market in which international traffic has become the principal engine of post-pandemic growth, while domestic demand continues to hold up despite fuel price volatility and rising geopolitical uncertainty.

The more immediate concern is the industry's tightening cost base, with regulatory requirements and higher operating costs placing particular pressure on regional aviation, where thinner margins and limited economies of scale leave operators more exposed.

At the same time, airport investment is emerging as a critical issue as infrastructure providers seek to accommodate future demand while airlines face increasing pressure to control costs.

The result is a market with solid underlying demand, but a less certain outlook as airlines, airports and regional operators navigate the tension between growth, affordability and the rising cost of connectivity.
