IATA predicts South African aviation to more than double provided 'key policies' are implemented

IATA stated (29-Jul-2019) South Africa's aviation market "could more than double in size" provided the country implements "key policies". According to IATA's latest study on the economic value of air transport and aviation in the country, "reforms to immigration policies, a reduction in charges affecting business, and making air transport central to economic planning" will further South Africa's aviation industry throughout the next 20 years. IATA noted the industry holds potential to host an additional 23.8 million passenger journeys, more than 372,000 jobs and produce USD20.2 billion by 2037. As previously reported by CAPA, IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac stated IATA is "concerned by the respective Q1 2019 4.4% and 3.6% contractions in the transport and tourism sectors, which reflect uncertainties and diminished confidence" and urged South Africa's Government to reform policy to "promote business, trade, investment and tourism".
