IATA lists three key areas for development to ensure sustainable global aviation operations

IATA DG and CEO Alexandre de Juniac stated (24-Apr-2017) sustainable operations in the aviation industry are pursuant to succeeding in the following three areas:

  • Global standards and regulation. Mr de Juniac noted the accident rate for IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) members was three times better than non-IOSA airlines over the last five years. Mr de Juniac also emphasised the need to adopt ICAO's Nov-2018 mandate for flight tracking;
  • Emerging safety challenges. Mr de Juniac raised concerns of solutions to problems succumbing to speed "barriers", as a result of overcomplexity. He also said: "An area that I would like to see the industry move ahead with speed is the use of data to improve safety";
  • Infrastructure. Mr de Juniac reiterated a lack of sufficient and economical airspace and airport capacity are "potential blockers of our ability to meet an expected doubling in passenger demand by 2035". He said South Korea is a "leader in understanding the value of strategic transport infrastructure to drive growth". Mr de Juniac also called for governments seeking to privatise airports to conduct a "careful consideration" of ownership, as private owners focused on maximising profits and shareholder value may not have the best local economic interests at heart. He said: "But we have seen airport privatisation dent a country's competitiveness by increasing the costs of mobility and compromising service levels". [more - original PR]
