IATA establishes Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization to manage IATA SAF Registry
IATA established (24-Mar-2025) the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) to manage the IATA developed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) Registry when it is released. IATA SVP sustainability and chief economist Marie Owens Thomsen said CADO will turbo charge the imminent launch of the IATA developed SAF Registry, with a mandate to manage the SAF Registry as a separate entity from IATA. Ms Owens Thomsen added: "The door is open for any stakeholder in the SAF value chain, including governments, to join CADO". IATA director general Willie Walsh said the SAF Registry is a critical piece of market infrastructure that is indispensable in building a global, transparent, and liquid global market for SAF. Background ✨
IATA planned to launch the SAF Registry in April 2025, designed to allow airlines to account for emissions reductions from using sustainable aviation fuel and to claim SAF benefits regardless of where the fuel is uplifted1. IATA's director general highlighted that airlines invested record amounts in SAF in 2024, but SAF accounted for less than 0.5% of fuel needs, urging governments to prioritise renewable fuel production to resolve supply and cost challenges2.
